American Adventures
Bobby Moore played for two teams in the North
American Soccer League.
The first team was the San Antonio Thunder for
whom he played 24 games in the summer of 1976 scoring 1 goal in the
process.
In the summer of 1978 Bobby returned to the USA to play 7 games for the Seattle Sounders. There was also to be an International swansong with appearances for Team USA in games against the Italians, the Brazilians and an England team that was captained by Gerry Francis.
The games took place in May 1976 in the Bicentennial Soccer Tournament. The Italians were the first opposition and even with Bobby Moore as captain and Pele up front the Italians strolled through to win 4 - 0. The second game was against Brazil and things were better this time with Team USA only losing 2 - 0. In the final game against England the score finished 3 - 1 with Team USA once again on the losing side. Team USA was made up of ageing players from the NASL and they were never really in with a chance of victory . The tournament was eventually won by Brazil.
Off To Fulham
On March 13th 1974 Fulham manager Alec Stock made a bid for Bobby Moore who was being made available for transfer by West Ham United for a fee of £25,000. Moore was unhappy that the club were asking for a fee as he had been told at the start of the season that he would be allowed to leave on a free transfer as the club moved into a new era with younger players.
Moore was hoping to be reunited with his mentor Malcolm Allison at Crystal Palace but that call never came despite Moore privately deciding that he would happilly take a £5,000 per year pay cut, how times have changed! Interest was shown by Stoke and Leicester but it was Portsmouth and Norwich, both of whom were in the second division, who actually made offers of a contract. Both clubs had agreed to let Moore live in London, train at West Ham during the week and travel to games on the Saturday. When Fulham showed an interest the day before the transfer window closed for the season his mind was made up after conversations with friends Alan Mullery, George Cohen and Johnny Haynes all of whom told him he would enjoy his time at Fulham. In fact it was Alan Mullery who went with Fulham's club secretary Graham Hortop to West Ham to clinch the signing.
Bobby Moore's first game at Fulham was on Tuesday the 19th of March against Middlesbrough at Craven Cottage where the gate was doubled by the appearance of Moore to 18,000. Fulham lost 0 - 4 but Moore was excited by the challenges ahead.
Moore remained at Fulham for a further three full seasons before finally retiring after an away trip to Blackburn Rovers on the 14th May 1977. During his three years at Fulham he managed to make a final appearance at Wembley Stadium in the 1975 FA Cup final which, in one of those twists of fate so often thrown up in football, was against West Ham United.
